Where it all started
Diggers, one of the glamour teams for a large part of the
20th Century, began life as May Consolidated, a club formed in 1892. One year
later, at a meeting in the East London Hotel, Diggers Rugby Club was born, also
incorporating the Main Reef Club. Founding members included Fred Frazer,
Percy Alexander, Tommy Duff, Dave Eskine, Tile Corbett, W Wayland and G Ladds.
The list of former Diggers players includes more than 30
Springboks and a number of Springbok captains, such as Dawie de Villiers, Piet
Greyling, and Avril Malan, including the former president of the Golden
Lions Rugby Union Kevin de Klerk. Dr Louis Luytt was a former
Chairman and President of Diggers.
Over the past 130 years we have produced the following:
- 200
players capped for Transvaal
- 30
Springboks, including the former President of the Golden Lions Rugby Union
Kevin de Klerk
- 3
Springbok Captains
- 2

The club was based at Springfield in the South of
Johannesburg until it moved to Randburg Sports Complex in 1992, and merged
with the Randburg Rugby Club.
In 1999 the Junior Club, fondly known as The Impi's was started by Hans Marx.
The Youth Club focuses on age groups are u6 - u18, before our Impi's move into
the Senior Club.
By 1895, the club was strong enough to win the Pirates Grand
Challenge – originally called the Imroth Trophy
Diggers have won the competition in “surges” over the years,
along with 3 other clubs.
Three clubs hold the record of five successive titles. Diggers
Rugby Club achieved it twice in 1895 – 1899 and 1958 – 1962. The other
two clubs are Pirates
Rugby Club (1890 – 1894) and Pukke (2002 – 2006).
